Jordan has proved to be a safe destination for travelers in the volatile Middle East. Even the recent death of King Hussein should not worry travelers, says Eric Zandvliet, an analyst with Control Risks Group, a U.S. security and safety company. He said that changes in the royal family and the succession of a new king actually decrease the chance of popular unrest. "Jordanians uncertain about the future will not test the resolve of the regime."

Still, keep in mind that Jordan has had pro-Iraqi demonstrations during periods of U.S. and British bombing, so it's best to avoid public gatherings and overt U.S. symbols, especially in Amman and the southern city of Ma'an. Also, at Palestinian refugee camps, children have been known to thrown stones at Westerners.
